Liaisons with the Vice Presidents for Standards and Ethics in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology

Charge

Define the standards for clinical certification and apply those standards in the certification of individuals; may also develop and administer a credentialing program for assistants.

Composition

The certification body consists of 16 voting members, including a chair, from the public and professional communities. The following proportional representation is required:

  • At least 5 individuals who hold the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology;
  • At least 5 individuals who hold the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology
  • 2 certified specialists who represent two different specialty areas. (Note: No sitting member of a specialty certification board may serve concurrently on the CFCC)
  • 2 public members

At least four members of the CFCC must be practitioners, two of whom are certified speech-language pathologists and two certified audiologists. A practitioner is defined as an individual who is employed full-time in non-academic settings. Individuals must have the direct delivery of speech-language-hearing services as their primary employment function at the time of appointment.

In addition to the above members, non-voting participants include 1 ex officio member from the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA), 2 student members, one each from the professions of audiology and speech-language pathology and 1 National office ex officio member. All members, with the exception of the public members and two ex officio members, must hold current ASHA certification in the appropriate area(s). The individuals from the profession of audiology and the individuals from the profession of speech-language pathology must hold ASHA membership.

Commitments/Obligations

  1. Participate in accordance with the roles and responsibilities of the members of any ASHA boards, councils, or committees to work toward the fulfillment of the group’s objectives; including the following:
    1. Inform their employer of the responsibilities and commitments required of committee members
    2. Attend new member orientation and training activities (as described in IV-E above), all meetings, and participate in all conference calls of the committee
    3. Complete assignments delegated by the chair
    4. Acknowledge all communications concerning committee work by requested deadline
    5. Prepare for meetings and conference calls by reviewing all relevant material and pertinent background information
    6. Participate in all discussions
    7. Maintain a professional demeanor when other ideas or conflicting viewpoints are presented
  2. Attend three CFCC meetings per year
    1. Two meetings at the ASHA National Office in Rockville MD: one winter, one summer; attend entire meeting (typically Friday morning through Sunday noon). Winter meetings are typically conducted beginning the second Friday of February; Summer meetings are typically conducted beginning the second Friday of July.
    2. One meeting the day before the opening of ASHA annual convention
  3. Participate fully on one or more committees as requested
    1. Actively participate in Committee activities during and between CFCC meetings, completing assignments as requested and described in this Operating Manual
  4. Maintain technical skills to effectively use a shared on-line web portal (CFCC Community​ site) to complete council activities.

Desired Service Qualifications/Experiences

All members, with the exception of the public members and two ex officio members, must hold current ASHA certification in the appropriate area(s). The individuals from the profession of audiology and the individuals from the profession of speech-language pathology must hold ASHA membership.
