Liaisons with the Vice Presidents for Standards and Ethics in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology

Charge

As a semi-autonomous body, formulate and from time to time amend the Code of Ethics containing the professional responsibilities by which members and certificate holders shall be bound; oversee the development of educational programs and materials on ethics by the Ethics Education Subcommittee (EES) for distribution to members and certificate holders, to academic programs, and to other agencies and associations; formulate and publish procedures that shall be used for the processing of alleged violations of the Code of Ethics, including a reasonable opportunity to be heard through counsel of one's own choosing; use its discretion to determine sanctions for violations, including suspension, revocation, or withholding of membership and certification.

Composition

The Board of Ethics has 17 ASHA certified members, including the Chair and Vice Chair. The board meets in-person three times per year at the National Office: winter, summer, and fall.

In the first three years of service, the members vote and adjudicate complaints. In the final and fourth year of service, the members serve on the Ethics Education Subcommittee developing educational programs and materials on ethics.

The composition includes at least 6 Audiologists (CCC-A), and at least 6 Speech-Language Pathologists (CCC-SLP), and 2 Public Members, including 1 Chair and 1 Vice Chair who both vote, and requires that at least 4 of the 12 members are practitioners (current or within past 10 years) and at least 2 of the 4 practitioners have school-based experience. The Board of Ethics (BOE) has one subcommittee, the Ethics Education Subcommittee (EES).

Term

All members have 4 year, staggered terms.

Commitments/Obligations

Generally, in the first three years of service, the members vote and adjudicate complaints. These are the adjudicators. In the final and fourth year of service, the members serve on the Ethics Education Subcommittee (EES) developing educational programs and materials on ethics.

Desired Service Qualifications/Experiences

Those appointed to the Board of Ethics are experienced ASHA certified professionals as well as experienced ASHA volunteers. Practitioners are preferred. State licensing board experience is extremely helpful. In addition, new members are chosen in terms of suitability to engage in sensitive, confidential work dealing with a variety of ethical, legal, and professional disciplinary matters.
