Vice President for Academic Affairs in Speech-Language Pathology

Barbara Rodríguez, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a Professor of Speech and Hearing Sciences and Senior Vice Provost at the University of New Mexico. She has been active for 34 years as a speech-language pathologist (SLP), clinical mentor, clinic director, CAA program director, department chair, professor, and researcher. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of New Mexico, a master of science degree from the University of New Mexico, and a doctor of philosophy (PhD) from the University of Washington. Before returning to complete her PhD, she worked as a bilingual (English/Spanish) school-based and early intervention SLP in rural New Mexico.

Dr. Rodríguez has a long-standing commitment to best practices in bilingual speech-language pathology. Her research and teaching interests are in cultural competence, bilingual language acquisition, and bilingual language assessment. Dr. Rodríguez, in collaboration with New Mexico State University faculty colleagues, implemented a graduate education program to prepare graduate students in bilingual speech-language pathology.

Dr. Rodríguez currently serves as the University of New Mexico’s Senior Vice Provost. She works closely with the Provost, other campus leaders, faculty, and members of her reporting units to advance the academic mission of the University.

Dr. Rodríguez has been an active member of ASHA. Her volunteer service to ASHA includes roles as a member of the Council for Clinical Certification in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CFCC), Chair of the CFCC SLP Committee, member of the Multicultural Issues Board, member of Special Interest Group 14 (Cultural and Linguistic Diversity), Ad Hoc Committee on Recognition of Advanced Non-Clinical Practice, subject matter expert reviewer for ASHA’s Cultural Competence Practice Portal page, and program committee member for various ASHA Conventions. She is a recipient of ASHA’s Certificate of Recognition for Special Contributions in Multicultural Affairs; is an ASHA Diversity Champion, New Mexico Speech-Language and Hearing Association (NMSHA) Fellow; and earned the NMSHA Honors of the Association.
