Hill Day 2024

Committee Spotlight!

Meet ASHA member Margot L. Beckerman, AuD, CCC-A. In this short interview, Margot shares her experience serving on ASHA’s Financial Planning Board (FPB).

What has been the most rewarding part of serving on the Financial Planning Board?

Serving on the Financial Planning Board has given me a strong understanding of the workings of the Association. Most importantly, the role of a FPB member is one of fiduciary responsibility. Being on this particular board has also provided a glimpse of the breadth and depth of programs and systems at ASHA. It has become clear to me that the Association puts significant thought and effort into how member dues are spent, always seeking to maximize the impact of these dollars.

How do you see the work of the board making a difference?

The FBP has the significant fiduciary responsibility of reviewing the annual budget of the Association and recommending approval of the budget to the Board of Directors. The FBP carefully reviews the various funding requests for work on ASHA’s Strategic Pathway objectives, which in turn has a direct impact on the long-range plan of the Association. The FPB also makes recommendations to the Board of Directors with respect to policies and activities with fiscal impact on the Association. In the end, the FBP serves an important role of providing detailed budget review, ensuring that member dues and non-dues revenue are used for the greater good.

What motivates you to give your time and expertise to ASHA?

Serving the Association is personally rewarding for me and it “supplements” my day job by providing a broader perspective of our professions. Networking with fellow committee and board members—audiologists and SLPs from across the country—and learning from their expertise and experiences is extremely rewarding. I am fortunate to be able to be connected to the professions beyond the work of my “day” job in my volunteer roles with ASHA.
