Exchange: Implementation of the DEI Requirement by ASHA Certification

September 15, 2022

In the last issue of Intersections, we shared information about the upcoming DEI Professional Development Requirement for the 2020 Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Certification Standards that takes effect for ASHA Members with a January 1, 2023 – January 1, 2025 interval. As a reminder, there were title and content changes made to the Subject Code for Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in Education, Training, Service Delivery, and Public Policy – 7030. This code has now been renamed “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Education, Training, Service Delivery, and Public Policy – 7030.”

ASHA Certification will implement the DEI Requirement in a manner similar our implementation of the Ethics Requirement. For example, if someone completes a course with the subject code of “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Education, Training, Service Delivery, and Public Policy – 7030” within their certification interval and pays the applicable registry fee, they will be marked as “compliant” for this requirement within the Certification system. Participants will also have the ability to self-attest to this requirement by submitting a compliance form at the end of their Certification Maintenance cycle.

The subject code indicated on previously registered courses will most likely still be appropriate. However, we understand that due to the changes we made to the subject code “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Education, Training, Service Delivery, and Public Policy – 7030,” it may be appropriate to have a subject code changed/updated on an already registered course(s) that is still available to learners. If you feel that this is the case for one or more of your courses, please contact your Provider Manager to discuss prior to December 1st.
