Essential Duties and Responsibilities
In addition to the essential duties and responsibilities required for all Board of Directors (BOD) members, the Vice President for Academic Affairs in Audiology is charged with the following tasks:
- Participate in developing, promoting, and hosting a gathering of academics at the ASHA Convention
- Initiate appropriate recommendations for actions to advance undergraduate and graduate education in audiology
- Help recruit individuals into the study of human communication sciences and disorders, and actively seek sources for student financial support
- Serve as the BOD liaison to—and promote the activities of—the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD) regarding academic issues in audiology related to professional development in administration, leadership, and pedagogy
- Attend the annual CAPCSD conference
- Serve as member and ASHA representative on the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) to promote interprofessional learning experiences
- Encourage and promote doctoral studies for both clinical and research audiology careers
- Serve on the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) Board of Directors
- Attend one or more conventions and conferences of related audiology organizations as invited by ASHA’s Chief Staff Officer for Audiology and as the member’s schedule allows (e.g., American Academy of Audiology, Hearing Industries Association, Early Hearing Detection and Intervention, Education Audiology Association, National Hearing Conservation Association, World Congress of Audiology, Academy of Doctors of Audiology, American Balance Society, American Auditory Society, Acoustical Society of America). Note: Attendance at these conferences is shared among BOD members representing audiology.
ASHA Standing Committees, Boards, and Councils
The Vice President for Academic Affairs in Audiology serves as the BOD liaison to the following ASHA standing Committees, Boards, and Councils (CBCs):
Essential Experience/Expertise/Skills
In addition to the Experience/Expertise/Skills essential for all BOD members, the Vice President for Academic Affairs in Audiology requires the following:
- Experience in higher education or academic career background—university or clinical preceptor setting
- Familiarity with accreditation, certification, and other issues related to higher education
- Experience with interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional collaborative practice (IPP)
- Awareness of current issues facing academic programs and pre-professional education
- Knowledge of the functions of academic programs/institutions—for example, faculty-related responsibilities such as recruitment, hiring, tenure-track and non-tenure-track positions, key committees, teaching, service, research, and evaluation; student related responsibilities such as recruitment, admission, advising, and evaluation; and university-wide responsibilities such as committees and interprofessional activities
- Ability to represent all academic programs without bias toward any
Time Commitment (excluding travel time)
- Weekly (routine tasks, emails, and voting): 4–6 hours
- Monthly (CBC work and BOD virtual conferencing): 8–10 hours
- Quarterly (meeting prep and attendance): 3–4 days
