Essential Duties and Responsibilities

In addition to the essential duties required for all Board of Directors (BOD) members, the Vice President for Government Affairs and Public Policy is charged with the following tasks:

  • Offer appropriate recommendations for legislative, regulatory, and other public policy objectives, activities, and initiatives that are rooted in the priorities of the ASHA Public Policy Agenda
  • Promote education, understanding, and support among the public, governmental and nongovernmental bodies, and members of other professions regarding the needs and rights of individuals with communication disorders
  • Serve as the BOD liaison to the Joint Committee on State-National Association Relationships
  • Attend the spring and fall meetings of the Council of State Association Presidents (CSAP)
  • Attend at least one Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) meeting and one Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) meeting during BOD tenure (encouraged but optional)

ASHA Standing Committees, Boards, and Councils

The Vice President for Government Affairs and Public Policy serves as the BOD Liaison to the following ASHA standing Committees, Boards, and Councils (CBCs):

Essential Experience/Expertise/Skills

In addition to the Experience/Expertise/Skills essential for all BOD members, the Vice President for Government Affairs and Public Policy requires the following:

  • Previous experience with state- or federal-level advocacy (e.g., service on the ASHA Advisory Councils or on the Committee of Ambassadors or in an advocacy-related role with a state association)
  • Understanding of, and experience using, clinical coding and billing helpful
  • Working knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and third-party billing rules and regulations in at least one work setting

Time Commitment (excluding travel time)

  • Weekly (routine tasks, emails, and voting): 6–8 hours
  • Monthly (CBC work and BOD virtual conferencing): 8–10 hours
  • Quarterly (meeting prep and attendance): 4–8 days
