ASHA Stands United Against Hate, Intolerance, and Violence

February 1, 2024

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) reaffirms our unwavering commitment to the mission and core values that define our Association and shape our shared identity.

As our world witnesses an unfortunate surge in acts of hate, intolerance, and violence, it is disheartening to see how words, when infused with negativity and prejudice, can manifest into actions that have severe consequences on individuals and communities alike.

We, as an Association, condemn any language or resulting action used to harm, attack, or discriminate against people based on any dimension of diversity, such as age, disability, ethnicity, gender/gender expression/gender identity, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status. Such language and behavior in one’s professional role are not only incompatible with our Code of Ethics but also are fundamentally unacceptable.

Therefore, ASHA fervently and unequivocally condemns all forms of hate and violence. We reject intolerance. We abhor hate—and hate speech—in any form. Our Association stands as a beacon of unity, understanding, and compassion, fostering an environment where diversity and inclusion are expected, and differences are respected.

Let us stand united, engaging in constructive dialogue and fostering an environment where everyone is valued and respected. Together, we can contribute to a world where understanding triumphs over ignorance, and empathy prevails over hatred.

We stand united in our collective commitment to making effective communication, a human right, accessible and achievable for all.
