District of Columbia Teacher Requirements for Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists

The information below is collected from state regulatory agencies responsible for regulating school based speech-language pathologists and/or audiologists. Audiologist/Speech-Language Pathologist

Requirements for School Service Provider Certification, which is valid for 4 years:

A master's degree or higher in audiology or speech and language pathology; and
Completed a minimum of 75 semester hours in speech-language pathology, and audiology and allied fields. At least 36 of the semester hours must be at the graduate level. A letter grade of "C" or higher shall be required to accept coursework; and
Has successfully completed at least 350 hours of supervised field, practicum or internship as part of the degree program; and
Holds a valid license to practice audiology or speech pathology in the District of Columbia issued by the D.C. Department of Health, Board of Audiology and Speech Pathology.

Continuing Education

Option A – Renewal by Performance Evaluation Ratings

Applicants currently employed with a D.C. local education agency (LEA) that administers an official educator performance evaluation management system that is accepted by Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) for the purposes of educator credentialing may have their credential renewed based upon satisfactory practitioner performance.

Option B – Renewal by completion of professional development activities

Applicants must submit proper documentation verifying satisfactory completion of the equivalent of 120 hours of professional development (PD) training activities completed within the four year term of the credential being renewed.
The equivalent of 120 hours equals 120 actual clock hours of instruction/activity time completed; or 8 college credit hours; or a combination of both. One college credit hour equals 15 clock hours.
A minimum of the equivalent 60 hours must be directly related to the content area of the credential being renewed. The additional hours may align with any of the areas as indicated in the "acceptable PD activity domain table."
The hours may be accrued by completion of college coursework or completion of training activities delivered by the employing local education agency, national education organizations, related industry organizations, and/or accredited PD provider organizations.
