Georgia Teacher Requirements for Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists

The information below is collected from state regulatory agencies responsible for regulating school-based speech-language pathologists and/or audiologists. Audiologist

Professional Certificate

An individual is eligible for a standard Professional Certificate in the field of audiology based on meeting Georgia's standards of conduct and one of the following options: 

  • Completion of an ASHA approved master's degree or higher from a Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC)-accepted accredited institution in audiology.  
  • Completion of a state-approved certification preparation program in audiology at the master's degree level (level 5) or higher.  
  • Submission of a valid Georgia audiologist license issued by the Professional Licensing Boards Division of the Office of the Secretary State, O.C.G.A. Title 43.  

or

  • Submission of a valid Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in audiology from ASHA.

Continuing Education Requirement

To renew a Professional Audiology Certificate, an individual must meet one of the following options:

  • Completion of renewal requirements;
  • Submission of a valid State of Georgia Audiology license issued by the Professional Licensing Boards Division of the Office of the Secretary of State, O.C.G.A. Title 43; or
  • Submission of a valid Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

Speech-Language Pathologist

Professional Certificate

An applicant is eligible for a standard Professional Certificate in the field of speech-language pathology based on meeting the following requirements: 

  • Complete one of the following options:
    • Complete a state-approved certification preparation program in Speech and Language Pathology at the master’s degree level;
    • Complete a master’s degree level or higher program approved by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA);
    • Hold a valid ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Speech and Language Pathology; or
    • Hold a valid State of Georgia Speech and Language Pathologist license issued by the Professional Licensing Boards Division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
  • Meet the Special Georgia Requirements applicable to the field of Speech and Language Pathology:
    • Content knowledge assessment; and
    • Standards of Conduct.

Continuing Education Requirement

To renew a Professional Speech and Language Pathology Certificate, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • Have the employing Georgia local unit of administration (LUA) request the renewal. This requirement does not apply to renewal applications submitted prior to July 1, 2015, or renewal of professional certificates held by educators who have at least one (1) year of acceptable educator experience in a Georgia LUA, as outlined in GaPSC Rule 505-2-.25 EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS, paragraph (3)(a)1, while holding a valid Georgia renewable, professional certificate; and
  • Fulfill one of the following:
    • Complete renewal requirements outlined in GaPSC Rule 505-2-.36 RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS;
    • Hold a valid ASHA CCC in speech-language pathology; or 
    • Hold a valid State of Georgia Speech and Language Pathologist license issued by the Professional Licensing Boards Division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
