Oklahoma Licensing Requirements for Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists

The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of speech-language pathology and/or audiology. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.

Initial Licensure

Audiologist

After January 1, 2007, each applicant shall hold at least a Doctor of Audiology (AuD) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with emphasis in audiology or its equivalent. Prior to December 31, 2006, each applicant shall hold a master’s degree with major emphasis in audiology or its equivalent.
With the exception of doctoral applicants, audiology applicants must demonstrate completion of 1,820 supervised clinical hours.
Applicants with an AuD or PhD must provide evidence of a minimum of 350 supervised clinical practicum hours and no less than nine months of full-time, paid clinical fellowship.
Pass examinations approved by the Board of Examiners.

Note: Audiologists may dispense hearing aids under an audiology license.

Speech-Language Pathologist

Master's degree or equivalent with a major emphasis in speech-language pathology from a regionally accredited academic institution offering a graduate program in speech-language pathology that meets or exceeds prevailing national standards
Completion of a supervised clinical practicum experience of 400 clock hours; 375 must be in direct client contact and 25 in clinical observation; at least 325 of the hours must be completed in a graduate study program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation.
Completion of a supervised nine month, full-time, paid, clinical fellowship as approved by the Board of Examiners
Pass examinations approved by the Board of Examiners

Exemptions

Federal, state, county or municipal government employees
Hearing aid dealers/fitters
Physicians and persons under their direct supervision
Teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing certified by the Oklahoma State Department of Education or the Council on Education of the Deaf
Hearing screeners associated with charitable organizations
A nonresident may practice up to seven days in any calendar year if the person's education/experience is substantially equivalent to state requirements.
Any licensed persons from engaging in the profession for which they are licensed

Reciprocity

The Board may issue a license without examination to a person who holds a current license in another state or country so long as:

the other state or country maintains a system and standard of qualifications and examinations for speech-language pathologists and audiologists which meet or exceed the current requirements of licensure in Oklahoma; and
submits evidence of proof of licensure in good-standing.

The Board of Examiners may waive the request for transcripts, the clinical fellowship and the exam and grant a license to holders of ASHA's CCC.

Interim Practice

Applicants fulfilling the supervised clinical fellowship must obtain a license.
Applicants that meet the requirements for licensure are eligible for a temporary license, following a credentials review that is valid until the next regular Board of Examiners meeting.
Clinical fellows must be supervised by a speech-language pathologist licensed for a minimum of two years; each supervisor may accept a maximum of two interns.
Beginning January 2017, supervising speech-language pathologists must complete six hours of Board-approved training in clinical supervision.

Continuing Education

20 clock hours per two-year period, including three hours of professional ethics.
