The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of speech-language pathology and/or audiology. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.
Note: A speech-language therapist must have obtained bachelor's degree in speech therapy or its equivalent from a university accredited by the Council of Higher Education, if it operates in Puerto Rico, or from an institution recognized by a national accrediting body, if it is located in any of the states of the United States of America, or recognized by the Board, if it is located in another country.
The Board may establish reciprocal relations for licensed speech-language pathologists, audiologists or therapists.
The Board will issue a provisional license to an applicant who meets all the requirements except the examination.
Audiologists/Speech-Language Pathologists: Thirty hours of continuing education is required every three years. A minimum of twenty hours must be in-person. Two hours of cultural competence in LGBTTIQ populations is required.
Speech-Language Therapists: Twenty-five hours of continuing education is required each renewal period. A minimum of fifteen hours must be in-person. Two hours of cultural competence in LGBTTIQ populations is required.
Puerto Rico is not a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact. Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.
