The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of audiology and/or speech-language pathology in the state of Minnesota. ASHA Pathway: The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting requirements for licensure for both professions.

Audiologist

  • Doctoral degree

Audiologists must obtain a hearing dispenser license to dispense hearing aids. Audiologists are exempt from taking the written Hearing Instrument Dispenser examination but must achieve a passing score on the practical Hearing Instrument Dispenser examination.

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Master’s or doctoral degree

Both

  • Supervised clinical experience
  • National exam

Continuing Education: 30 hours every two years

ASLP-IC: Minnesota is a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: No provisions.

Audiologist

  • State license

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Tier 2 License - meet one of the following:
    • Bachelor’s degree
    • SLPA certificate and a bachelor's degree
    • Tier 3 License - meet one of the following:
      • Completed preparation program in speech-language pathology
      • ASHA CCC
      • State license

    Continuing Education: 75 clock hours

    A state license is required to work in early intervention in Minnesota.

    Audiologists and speech-language pathologists are able to provide early intervention services but cannot hold the position of early intervention specialist.

    Audiology Assistant

    Health Care Setting

    • Not regulated

    School Setting

    • Not regulated

    Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA)

    Health Care Setting

    • Associate’s degree from SLPA program or bachelor’s degree plus 100 hours of supervised field work
    • A licensed or ASHA-certified supervisor may direct no more than the equivalent of two full-time SLPAs at one time. 

    School Setting

    • Not regulated
