State Association Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering at your state association is an excellent way to gain experience and build your volunteering portfolio. Volunteer opportunities can range from micro-volunteering to joining a committee of interest to running for leadership positions on the state association’s board of directors.

Volunteer position: Vice President of Audiology/Education of Individuals who are Deaf/hard of hearing

Type: Hybrid

Application deadline: April 6, 2024

Description: You will contact chairs after board meetings to convey any questions or charges given by the president, membership, or board members; respond to questions, comments, and concerns by membership; and perform other duties [PDF] on various timelines.

Main role: Leadership, advocacy

Term: 2 years; term ends June 20, 2026

Travel: None

Required experience: Expertise in working with individuals who are Deaf or who have hearing disorders

Volunteer position #1: Membership Chair

Type: Virtual

Description: You will lead a committee with monthly online meetings. This committee develops membership recruitment and retention programs to expand the voice of members and promotes the mission of WSLHA.

Main role: Leadership, encouraging and supporting membership, mentoring

Volunteer position #2: Nominations Committee Chair

Type: Virtual

Description: You will chair monthly hourlong meetings. This committee seeks out volunteers for board, committee, or individual positions and is responsible for preparation, distribution, and collection of election materials.

Main role: Leadership, mentoring

Term: 2 years; reappointment is an option

Required experience: Work experience as an SLP (we can train you on the specific aspects of the role)

Volunteer position #1: Member At Large - Audiology

Type: Hybrid

Description: You will serve as a member of the WyoSHA board; attend meetings; and inform the board about concerns or observations in audiology for the state of Wyoming.

Main role: Advocacy, audiology

Term: 2 years; no end date

Travel: None

Required experience: Member of WyoSHA as an audiologist

Volunteering hours: 2 hours quarterly for meetings, other requirements dependent on activity

Volunteer position #2: Convention Planning Chair

Type: Hybrid

Description: You will help the president-elect to plan an in-person convention for SLPs and audiologists in Wyoming. You may also help with organization; act as a liaison to the board and the vendors; and arrange speakers with support of the board.

Main role: Professional development

Term: 1 year or more; no end date

Travel: None

Required experience: Member of WyoSHA interested in organizing and facilitating an in-person event

Volunteer position #3: Committee of Ambassadors - Audiology Representative

Type: Hybrid

Description: You will play an active role in advocacy for the professions and meet on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. each year; attend necessary meetings; act as an advocate for audiology at the national level; and serve as a liaison to the board.

Main role: Advocacy for audiology, leadership, mentoring

Term: 2 years; maximum of 2 consecutive terms

Required experience: Member of WyoSHA who currently provides audiology services in Wyoming

Volunteering hours: Quarterly board meetings, necessary travel as an ambassador, other volunteer hours as needed

Volunteer position #4: Secretary

Type: Hybrid

Description: You will take minutes at quarterly board meetings; keep track of the agenda; and submit minutes to be posted on the website. You are required to be detail-oriented and to attend all quarterly board meetings in addition to other board meetings outside of quarterly meetings, like business meetings and others at convention.

Required experience: Experience being detail-oriented and attentive, managing tasks, providing timely responses
