School choice programs have been in existence for over 150 years. School choice allows public education funds to follow students to an education program selected by their parent(s)/guardian(s). Voucher programs, charter schools, tax credit scholarships, and home schooling are a few examples of school choice programs.
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been increased attention on education alternatives. In-person, hybrid, and virtual schools are being implemented by the public education systems. School choice alternatives are also available in many states and local school districts across the country. With so many options, it may be difficult to make an informed decision especially if your child requires special supports and services.
ASHA supports the right of a parent/guardian to choose the education program for their child. ASHA believes that all children—including those with disabilities—have a right to an education program that meets their unique needs.
Following is a list of questions to consider when selecting your child’s education program. ASHA suggests that you examine these issues carefully, seek answers from potential school choice programs, and review your child’s current program with your school team before deciding.
ASHA is here to help with any questions or concerns you may have about ensuring your child has access to audiology and speech-language pathology services that you child may be entitled to under federal law. For questions or additional information, contact a member of ASHA's School Services Team.
