Hearing aids are not covered by Medicare; however, Medicaid or private insurance plans may cover the cost of hearing aids in whole or in part. Regardless of insurance type, patients must be offered the same services, the cost of the services must be equitable, and national procedure codes must be used for requesting reimbursement. ASHA offers the practitioner a number of resources on billing and reimbursement of hearing aids in Medicaid and private insurance plans and information modules developed by the ASHA Health Care Economics Committee.
Members can check their rates using ASHA's Milliman average charge data. The data cannot be shared with individuals who are not ASHA members, but members may use it as a reference for negotiating rates. Milliman data features hearing services codes, including V codes. Average charge data is available by contacting reimbursement@asha.org.
