Standard I of ASHA’s 2020 Audiology Certification Standards requires that “Applicants for certification must hold a doctoral degree in audiology from a program accredited by the Council for Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA), a program in CAA candidacy status, or equivalent.” To be fair and transparent to applicants who did not graduate from a CAA-accredited or CAA candidacy programs, the Council for Clinical Certification in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CFCC) examined several CAA-accredited doctor of audiology (AuD) programs to determine the equivalent of a CAA program. The research revealed a common core of doctoral courses that cover the knowledge and skills outcomes described in Standard II, which are listed below. A specific course in each area is not required; however, the content in each area must substantially cover each area to ensure readiness for independent practice.
The list below serves as a guide. Final determination will be made after the ASHA Certification staff and the CFCC evaluate an applicant’s transcript(s) and course description(s) to ensure that the course content is equivalent to a CAA program—including the depth and breadth of knowledge and skills for independent practice. In addition, applicants must complete supervised clinical practicum as described in Standard III as a part of their educational experience. Work experience cannot be substituted for supervised clinical practicum.
