Certification maintenance standards are designed to (1) contribute to professional development and (2) lead to acquiring and enhancing skills and knowledge required for independent audiology or speech-language pathology practice.
The 3-year interval/professional development hour (PDH) requirement provides assurance that certificate holders’ knowledge and skills meet the minimum requirements for practice. The Council for Clinical Certification in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CFCC) determined that 30 PDHs every 3 years is the minimum number of hours that would demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning and ensure currency in the field.
ASHA Certification Maintenance Standards require that all certificate holders (CCC-A and CCC-SLP) must accumulate 30 PDHs during each 3-year certification maintenance interval in order to maintain their ASHA Certificates of Clinical Competence (CCC).
Beginning with certificate holders in the January 1, 2023–December 31, 2025 maintenance interval: Out of 30 required PDHs for certification maintenance, at least 2 hours must be in cultural competency, cultural humility, culturally responsive practice, or diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
Beginning with certificate holders in the January 1, 2020–December 31, 2022 maintenance interval: Out of 30 required PDHs for certification maintenance, at least 1 hour must be in the area of ethics.
