Maintaining Your Certification

The learning requirements listed in the ASHA Certification Maintenance Standards are designed to (1) contribute to professional development and (2) lead to acquiring and enhancing skills and knowledge required for ongoing, independent audiology or speech-language pathology practice.

Certification maintenance standards require that all certificate holders (CCC-A and CCC-SLP) must accumulate 30 professional development hours (PDHs) during each 3-year certification maintenance interval in order to maintain their ASHA Certificates of Clinical Competence (CCC).

The 3-year interval and PDH requirement provide assurance that certificate holders’ knowledge and skills meet the minimum requirements for practice. The Council for Clinical Certification in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CFCC) determined that 30 PDHs every 3 years—with 3 hours of training in specific content areas—is the minimum number of hours that would demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning and ensure currency in the field.

In the fall of 2025, the language of the Certification Standards for Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology was updated to better define the 3 required hours of professional development in specific content areas.
