Resigning the Certificate of Clinical Competence

Sometimes life and work circumstances change, forcing a holder of the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-A or CCC-SLP) to face the difficult decision of resigning their CCC.

Before making the decision to do so, consider first whether changing your ASHA certification status may be the solution that will allow you to attend to medical circumstances (for yourself or for a family member), deploy on active military duty, or retire from practice without giving up your hard-earned CCC.

If you determine that the exemptions offered do not apply to you, or you are retiring from practice but are not eligible to receive Retired status (65 years old or 25 consecutive years of certification), then you may think that resigning your CCC may be the best option for you. Before making a final decision, please contact the Action Center at 800-498-2071 to discuss your particular circumstances.

Certificate holders who decide to resign their CCC should complete and submit the CCC Resigned Affidavit Form [PDF], at which time they may elect to join or continue ASHA membership. Upon receipt of the completed form, certification status will be changed to "Not Certified."

Reinstatement After Resigning

If you decide in the future to return to practice and want to regain your CCC, you will be required to apply for reinstatement and meet the certification standards in effect at that time, which may include completing professional development hours and taking the national exam (Praxis).

Ethics Violations

Please be aware that resigning your CCC will not exempt you from any ethics complaints or adjudication currently in process or any final decisions by the Board of Ethics.
