As many of you know, ASHA made an official statement on Monday of this week that was intended to let members and others know that we stand as an organization against racism, oppression against African Americans, and discrimination. Our statement fell short; it was not clear or strong enough, and for that we apologize. We missed the mark, and we let you down. We have heard from many members about the pain this message has caused, and we want to do better. We will do better, to support members and those they serve, and to commit individually and collectively, to build bridges, and to speak out against systemic and institutional racism. The Board of Directors will be issuing a new statement in the near future, please stay tuned.
In the meantime, the words of ASHA Chief Staff Officer for Multicultural Affairs Vicki Deal-Williams come closer to the heart of what we were trying to say on Monday, please take a moment to read her blog post.
Respectfully,
Arlene Pietranton
