Ethics Information From Other Health Organizations

Following are links to organizations that have useful information on professional ethics.

American Academy of Ophthalmology
Publishes ethics information statements, ethics policy statements, and ethics advisory opinions, many of which cover topics of interest to speech-language pathologists and audiologists (e.g., gifts to physicians from industry).

American Association for the Advancement of Science, Committee on Scientific Freedom and Responsibility and the Professional Society Ethics Group
Publishes quarterly the Professional Ethics Report.

American Association for the Advancement of Science: Resources for Teaching Integrity in Scientific Research
Includes a listing of resources such as videos, reports, periodicals, and books.

American Medical Association
Includes the AMA Policy Finder where Current Opinions of the Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs are published. There are 10 categories of opinions, many of which would be of interest to audiologists, speech-language pathologists and researchers (e.g., fees and charges, confidentiality, advertising, media relations, interprofessional relationships, etc.). Each category offers many different topics.

American Psychological Association
Includes Ethics Code of the American Psychological Association and covers topics such as relationship of ethics and law; fees and financial arrangements; assessments; advertising; privacy and confidentiality, accuracy and objectivity in teaching limitation on teaching; planning research; research responsibilities; informed consent to research; deception on research; reporting research results; publication credit, etc. The site also has an ethics office statement on services by telephone, teleconferencing, and Internet.

Center for Study of Ethics in the Professions
Offers comprehensive information such as codes of ethics of a variety of organizations in health care, education, and academia. It also has useful instructive information and discussions such as how to use codes of ethics; how to write a code of ethics, infusing ethics across the curriculum, and a list of other ethics-related resources.

Ethical Guidelines for Managing Conflicts of Interest Curriculum Module
AcademyHealth, with support from the Association of American Medical Colleges, developed a Conflicts of Interest Curriculum Module that can be used by individuals and institutions to evaluate their own behavior, update their policies, educate their trainees, and guide the management of difficult ethical situations. The module is designed to engage the user through a participatory group discussion and includes "ready to use" materials that can be modified for different classroom applications and degree program levels.

Human Participant Protections Education for Research Teams (National Institutes of Health)

National Association of School Psychologists
Offers guidance for school psychologists including professional relationships with students; professional relationships with the school; principles governing relationships with other professions.

National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature, Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Georgetown University
Addresses topics such as advance directives, codes of ethics, confidentiality, ethics committees, informed consent, managed care, medical ethics, and parental consent.
