Establishing the Worth of Your Work

You have probably reached this page because you heard about or already received a Current Procedural Terminology (CPT® American Medical Association) code survey from ASHA. Thank you for your interest in learning more about this important process! Here’s what you need to know.

CPT code surveys collect your input on how much time and skill is needed to perform a service or procedure.

CPT code surveys are part of an American Medical Association (AMA) process to value new or revised CPT codes. Learn how a CPT code becomes a code [PDF].

Data collected from the surveys are the foundation of recommendations to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regarding the value of a CPT code.

As a practicing clinician, you are the most qualified to articulate the value of the professional, skilled work that you provide. Your input is critical to establish accurate professional work value recommendations to the AMA and CMS.

CMS considers the professional work value recommendations as it develops the annual Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) for payment of Part B (outpatient) services. Many Medicaid programs and private payers use the MPFS as the basis for their own fee schedules, so this process has far-reaching implications.

Without your participation, ASHA may not be able to meet the minimum number of responses required by the AMA.

If you receive a survey, consider participating if you

are a practicing clinician;
practice in the United States;
regularly perform the service or procedure being surveyed; and
do not have a financial interest in the service or procedure beyond providing the service in the course of patient care.

Each CPT code survey is sent to a random sample of clinicians. You do not have to currently bill Medicare or other third-party payers or even use CPT codes in order to complete a survey. You just need to be a practicing clinician who performs the service or procedure described by the CPT code.

It is important to follow the instructions and carefully review background information to ensure that you can objectively and accurately complete the survey.

Data collected through the surveys remain anonymous and are only presented to the AMA and CMS in summary form.
