Why Does it Matter?

Antonio and Ronald both experienced a major health event—a stroke. They received the same medical diagnosis. They have different social determinants of health (SDOH). Antonio and Ronald are fictional characters, but they represent the many people with the same diagnosis and different SDOH that audiologists and speech-language pathologists work with every day. You can explore how a stroke affects Antonio and Ronald’s SDOH below and download the content at the bottom of the page.

Client SDOH is Important to Person-Centered Care

CSD professionals know that no two clients have identical health. When people have the same medical or communication diagnosis, their health outcomes may be different. As audiologists and speech-language pathologists learn more about clients’ social determinants of health (SDOH), they can use this information to spot potential barriers and draw upon someone’s strengths. Incorporating SDOH information into treatment is a crucial part of providing patient centered care.
