Advocacy Common Core State Standards

With the implementation of common core and/or state standards, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) need to advocate for their roles and responsibilities and for the needs of the students with communication disorders who they serve. SLPs can take on a variety of roles —they may serve as members of Response to Intervention (RTI) teams, collaborate with teachers and other education professionals in the academic setting, and assume leadership roles in explaining and clarifying language issues tied to the standards. In all these capacities, and in serving the needs of students in the school setting, advocacy is essential. ASHA offers several resources to assist the school-based SLP in advocating for local, state, and federal resources and policies.
