ASHA Award Programs for Students
ASHA offers several programs to foster leadership and promote careers in academia and research. Programs are available to undergraduate, master’s, entry-level clinical doctoral (e.g., AuD), post-entry-level clinical doctoral (e.g., SLPD), and research doctoral (e.g., PhD) degree students enrolled in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) programs, as well as postdoctoral fellows.
Student Ethics Essay Award (SEEA)
The annual SEEA essay competition encourages students to think about ethical decision making as they prepare for careers in audiology, speech-language pathology, or speech, language, and hearing sciences. SEEA is open to part-time or full-time students enrolled in any undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, or entry-level graduate program in CSD.
Students Preparing for Academic-Research Careers (SPARC)
The SPARC award aims to cultivate student interest in pursuing a research doctorate (PhD) in CSD and a career as a faculty-researcher in CSD. The award is open to undergraduate and entry-level clinical degree students.
Student Programs at ASHA Convention
The following programs offer students opportunities to enhance leadership skills, engage with top researchers, and/or develop professional competencies while attending the ASHA Convention. Students and postdoctoral fellows might be eligible for more than one program; however, students and postdoctoral fellows may apply to only one of the following programs per year. Audiology/Hearing Science Research Travel Award (ARTA)
Entry-level clinical doctoral (AuD) students, research doctoral (PhD) students, and postdoctoral fellows in audiology or hearing science receive funding to attend the ASHA Convention. This award enables recipients to learn about ASHA’s offerings in hearing science and research career development and to interact with experienced researchers.
Minority Student Leadership Program (MSLP)
Undergraduate seniors through doctoral students from underrepresented populations participate in programming and activities virtually and at the ASHA Convention designed to enhance their leadership skills, to demonstrate how leadership occurs within the association, and to encourage interaction with leaders in the professions.
Research Mentoring-Pair Travel Award (RMPTA)
Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows receive funding to attend the Research Symposium at the ASHA Convention with a mentor of their choosing. Awardees attend networking events at Convention and engage in mentoring activities before, during, and after the Symposium. This award and the Research Symposium are supported by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.
