Essential Duties and Responsibilities

In addition to the essential duties and responsibilities required for all Board of Directors (BOD) members, the Vice President for Speech-Language Pathology Practice is charged with the following tasks:

  • Monitor the emergence of new areas of practice and the application of new knowledge and research data to the practice of speech-language pathology
  • Address unique issues and concerns of specific work settings in which the profession of speech-language pathology is practiced
  • Serve as liaison to the Joint Committee on Interprofessional Relations Between the American Psychological Association and ASHA
  • Serve as liaison to the National Joint Committee for the Communication Needs of Persons with Severe Disabilities
  • Serve as liaison to the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities

ASHA Standing Committees/Boards/Councils

The Vice President for Speech-Language Pathology Practice serves as the BOD liaison to the following ASHA standing Committees, Boards, and Councils (CBCs):

Essential Experience/Expertise/Skills

In addition to the Experience/Expertise/Skills essential for all BOD members, the Vice President for Speech-Language Pathology Practice requires the following:

  • ASHA certification in speech-language pathology
  • Experience in direct clinical care of patients, clients, learners/consumers
  • Knowledge and skills supervising and working with speech-language pathology assistants.
  • Current or past membership in an ASHA Special Interest Group (SIG) helpful
  • Understanding of, respect for, and willingness to learn about all areas of speech-language pathology practice (e.g., medical/clinical, schools, private practice, and academic)
  • Ability to demonstrate empathy for the challenges faced by members who practice in each work setting and the tension that may exist between them
  • Fundamental understanding of billing, reimbursement, and coding

Time Commitment (excluding travel time)

  • Weekly (routine tasks, emails, and voting): 6–8 hours
  • Monthly (CBC work and BOD virtual conferencing): 8–10 hours
  • Quarterly (meeting prep and attendance): 4–8 days
