Understand why changes in education and health care mean that many schools, clinics, and universities are incorporating IPE/IPP into the way they work.
Check out real-life examples from ASHA members and ASHA's Special Interest Groups that highlight how IPE/IPP teams improved outcomes for students and patients.
Derek J. Stiles, PhD, CCC-A, is director of Audiology and director of the Center for Communication Enhancement at Boston Children’s Hospital. He has been a practicing audiologist for more than 20 years—with a focus on pediatric diagnostics, hearing technology, and interdisciplinary clinical leadership.
Dr. Stiles earned a PhD in Speech and Hearing Science from The University of Iowa and an MA in Communicative Disorders from San Diego State University. He currently holds an adjunct faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School and serves as a lecturer and preceptor in pediatric audiology training programs.
At Boston Children’s Hospital, Dr. Stiles leads multisite teams and oversees strategic initiatives in quality improvement, documentation standards, and equitable access to care. He has developed clinical dashboards to present complex operational and clinical data in clear, actionable formats. He has authored numerous pediatric audiology guidelines that are now used nationally and internationally. He also co-leads a national collaboration on clinical productivity metrics in audiology.
Dr. Stiles has held leadership roles with ASHA’s Special Interest Group 9, Pediatric Hearing and Hearing Disorders; the American Academy of Audiology’s Coding and Reimbursement Committee; and multiple hospital-based operations and quality committees. He has been a volunteer for multiple ASHA Convention topic committees. He has also served as a grant-funded researcher and an invited speaker on topics related to hearing aid outcomes, clinic management, and child development.
Outside of work, Dr. Stiles is a proud father to two amazing teenagers and an enthusiastic—but decidedly amateur—accordion player.
