Candidate for President-Elect: Bernadette Mayfield-Clarke, CCC-SLP

Bernadette Mayfield-Clarke, PhD, has had a fulfilling, versatile career as an administrator employed in various settings (i.e., school-based, contract services, clinical, health care service provider, university professor, program director, and associate dean for research and graduate studies). She received her PhD and master’s degrees in human communication sciences and disorders from Howard University, Washington, D.C., and a bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and disorders from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Dr. Mayfield-Clarke currently functions as a private practitioner and consultant with a specialization in corporate speech-language pathology for government employees and English language learners (ELLs). In addition, she serves as a peer reviewer for the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, as a member of a standing Individuals With Disabilities Education Act / Americans With Disabilities Act (IDEA/ADA) panel.

With her in-depth knowledge of programmatic and university operations, Dr. Mayfield-Clarke has worked as program professor for the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MS-SLP) and Doctor of Speech-Language Pathology (SLPD) programs at Nova Southeastern University, College of Health Care Sciences, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She functioned as an Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences and as a tenured Associate Professor and Program Director for Speech Communication and Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

Prior to relocating to North Carolina, she was an Adjunct Clinical Faculty Member at California State University, Northridge, the Director of Speech-Language Pathology for a 200-bed skilled nursing facility, and a contractor for school-based services and rehabilitation hospitals.

Her volunteer services to ASHA include Vice President for Finance (2021–2023); Chair, Financial Planning Board (2017–2018); appointed member of the Financial Planning Board; Student to Empowered Professional (S.T.E.P.) mentor; and a member of SIG 11, Administration and Supervision. Dr. Mayfield-Clarke has also served on the Board of Directors of the National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing (NBASLH) and served as the NBASLH Convention Chairperson. She was an advisory board member of the North Carolina State Employees Credit Union, Stoney Creek branch. Dr. Mayfield-Clarke is an ASHA Fellow.
